Dodgers beat Yankees — but sweat over Ohtani injury

The Los Angeles Dodgers won and lost Saturday night.

They won Game 2 of the World Series, 4-2, over the New York Yankees to take a two games to none series lead. But they lost superstar Shohei Ohtani to a left shoulder injury on a stolen-base attempt in the seventh inning.

The extent of the injury and Ohtani’s availability for the rest of the series remain unknown. After the game Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Ohtani’s strength and range of motion were good, but that he’s getting more tests done tonight.

“The scene, very concerning,” Roberts said. “Obviously when you get any one of your players that goes down, it’s concerning. But after the range of motion, the strength test, I felt much better about it.”

Before the sight of Ohtani writhing in pain quieted the crowd, it was another joyous night at Dodger Stadium, and the man in the spotlight was Dodgers rookie Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

After his 80th pitch, in the sixth inning, Yamamoto spun off the mound, clenched his fists and roared. He had just snuck a splitter past the bat of Aaron Judge for an inning-ending strikeout. Judge strode back to the Yankees dugout, shaking his head.

That image told the story of this World Series so far. The Dodgers have delivered. Judge and the Yankees are searching for answers. In a crucial Game 2, they recorded only four hits — three of which came in the ninth inning.

Yamamoto gave the Dodgers 6 1/3 innings of one-run baseball. He received a handshake from Roberts and a standing ovation from the crowd as he departed. He’d done his job — and then some.

Yankees starter Carlos Rodón’s homer problem reared its ugly head again at the worst time. In the second inning, Tommy Edman homered. (Juan Soto answered.) In the third, Rodón struck out Ohtani before running into two-out trouble: Mookie Betts singled, Teoscár Hernández and Freddie Freeman homered back-to-back, and Edman doubled. Rodón was yanked after 3 1/3 innings, having allowed six hits — half of them homers — and four runs.

The bigger concern in the Bronx is the continued disappearance of Yankees’ star slugger. Judge was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts, bringing his postseason line to 6 for 40 (.150).

Soto’s homer was the Yankees’ only hit until the ninth, when he started a rally by singling off the wall against Blake Treinen. Giancarlo Stanton and Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled. Anthony Rizzo was hit by pitch, loading the bases and bringing the tying run into scoring position. But Treinen whiffed Anthony Volpe, and lefty Alex Vesia induced a first-pitch fly out from pinch-hitter Jose Trevino.

The Yankees will start Clarke Schmidt opposite Dodgers starter Walker Buehler in Game 3 Monday night at Yankee Stadium.

Game 2’s most valuable player

Yankees vs Dodgers World Series Game 2 live updates: Shohei Ohtani injury overshadows LA win (13)

Yoshinobu Yamamoto

It started with a walk and ended with absolute dominance.

In 18 regular season starts, Yoshinobu Yamamoto never went at least six innings without allowing more than one hit, but he did it in Game 2 of the World Series. His 6 1/3 innings completely quieted the Yankees offense, making a three-run game for much of the night feel like a blow out.

“From the first inning,” Game 1 hero Freddie Freeman said in a postgame TV interview, “you could just tell he had lights-out stuff.”

Yamamoto actually walked the first batter of the game, but he got through Juan Soto, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton to leave that runner stranded. He didn’t allow a hit until Soto homered in the third inning, but Yamamoto retired the next 11 batters he faced, striking out Judge to end the sixth inning, then getting Stanton to pop up for the first out of the seventh.

The Dodgers let their bullpen take it from there.

Granted, this was also a good night for the Dodgers offense, especially early. Pouncing on Yankees starter Carlos Rodón, Freeman homered again. Teoscar Hernández went deep. Mookie Betts and Tommy Edman stayed hot. But a relatively close game never actually felt close until the very end, and that was because of Yamamoto.

“Pitching,” Freeman said, “is what’s going to win.”

Game 2’s least valuable player

Aaron Judge

We could pile on Carlos Rodón, who was unable to tame the Dodgers lineup. Or Anthony Volpe, who swung at a pitch in the other batter’s box with the bases loaded in the ninth. But there’s no use sugar-coating the situation with Judge. He ain’t right. These are bad at-bats.

The Dodgers are keeping him off-balance with spin, chasing pitcher’s pitches and behind on heaters. After striking out three times in both Game 1 and Game 2, Judge is 6 for 40 (.150) this postseason. He has struck out 13 times in his past five games combined. Is it time to move him down in the order? I’m not sure that would solve much; the Yankees aren’t winning this series without Judge finding his way — fast. But, at this point, can it really hurt?

Your views on tonight’s game

Yankees vs Dodgers World Series Game 2 live updates: Shohei Ohtani injury overshadows LA win (23)

Mike B: “That’s all right if Ohtani is out — Judge is a disaster right now so it evens out.”

Dan E: “Yankees lack of depth in the lineup is especially apparent when Judge isn't hitting. Counting on Volpe and Trevino in the 9th was... rough.”

Rob K: “Dodgers will win this series in 5 regardless. Don’t need Ohtani.”

Gary D: “The Dodgers have a top four that you can’t pitch around. And they have a long lineup, too. Their relief staff is deep enough so that if one pitcher isn’t having a good night they can bring in four or five other good pitchers. So if their starters pitch well, as they’ve done so far, it’s really tough to beat them. Maybe one or two games, sure, but four is just not too likely.”

Thank you to everybody for your contributions throughout and we look forward to hearing from you during Game 3 on Monday.

Pivotal moment 2: Betts extending the third inning

Yankees vs Dodgers World Series Game 2 live updates: Shohei Ohtani injury overshadows LA win (28)

After Juan Soto tied the game with his solo homer in the top of the third, Carlos Rondón retired Miguel Rojas and Shohei Ohtani needing just one more out to get out of the inning with the game still tied.

Instead, Mookie Betts pulled a 3-1 fastball from Rondón into left for a single. Betts extended the inning for Teoscar Hernandez and Freddie Freeman to hit the first back-to-back homers by Dodgers teammates in the World Series since 1981, the last time the Yankees and Dodgers met in the World Series.

Pivotal moment 1: Trevino flies out to end the game

Yankees vs Dodgers World Series Game 2 live updates: Shohei Ohtani injury overshadows LA win (33)

The bases were loaded and Dave Roberts had just called left-hander Alex Vesia in from the bullpen to face left-handed batter Austin Wells. Aaron Boone countered with right-handed pinch-hitter Jose Trevino, New York’s backup catcher. Although Trevino represented a somewhat better matchup than Wells (.526 OPS vs. LHP), Trevino was not exactly a force off the bench. His OPS against left-handed pitching this season was .626, and Vesia handles right-handed batters nearly as well as lefties.

The weakness of the Yankee bench against left-handed pitching showed. Boone’s only other option would have been switch-hitter Jasson Domínguez, who has a .387 OPS in all of 20 MLB plate appearances against left-handed pitching.

Trevino nonetheless got a hittable pitch, a middle-in fastball at 93.4 mph. Trevino, though, hit just .151 against left-handed fastballs in the regular season. He swung just under the ball and flied out 345 feet to center field. The Yankees stranded the bases loaded and finished the game 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Their ninth-inning rally made for another nailbiting finish but ended one big swing short of altering the game's outcome.

“In a game where we really got shut down there in the middle innings, our compete to the very end was really good,” Boone said. “We gave ourselves a chance to get right back in it and even win that game off a very good reliever. I loved the at-bats there at the end, the compete, the fight. I thought even Trevy got off a good swing off Vesia.

“No one said it's going to be easy. It's a long series, and we need to make it a long series now. We won't flinch. We've just got to keep at it.”

Aaron Boone acknowledges Aaron Judge struggles

Yankees vs Dodgers World Series Game 2 live updates: Shohei Ohtani injury overshadows LA win (38)

Aaron Boone acknowledged that swing decisions are playing a factor in Aaron Judge’s ice-cold postseason.

It's just about getting in a good position, Boone said of his slugger. “And everyone’s different in how they do it. You get in that strong position, then the swing decisions follow that.”

Judge has 19 strikeouts in 40 at-bats this postseason. He K’d three more times in four at-bats on Saturday, including in a critical spot in the ninth inning.

“It's getting in the best position to make a good swing decision but also be in a strong position to get a good swing off,” Boone said. “Everyone's different in how they do that, and I think he’s working through that a little bit right now.”

Plenty of concern for Shohei Ohtani

Yankees vs Dodgers World Series Game 2 live updates: Shohei Ohtani injury overshadows LA win (43)

There is seemingly a lot of concern for Shohei Ohtani, who exited the game with a shoulder injury. He had left the stadium within minutes of the game ending.

“Not only the dugout, but the whole stadium went silent,” said Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernandez. “You know how big Shohei is for this team. Hopefully he’s okay, and the day off tomorrow will help him get back on the field Monday.”

“Seeing him come off the field with a trainer holding his arm, obviously there’s a lot of concern,” Freeman said. “But we’ll see how it is the next two days. I really don’t have any info. But when you have a group like this, they can pick me up when I’ve been down. And we’ll try to do the same for him.”

Manager Dave Roberts said his strength and range of motion were good, but that he’s getting more tests done tonight.

“The scene, very concerning,” Roberts said. “Obviously when you get any one of your players that goes down, it's concerning. But after kind of the range of motion, the strength test, I felt much better about it.”

Freddie Freeman said he couldn’t get any sleep last night after his walkoff grand slam. He tossed and turned all night, and his kids got up and refused to take a bath. But, he said, he found some energy when he got to the ballpark.

For a player that cried upon his first return to Atlanta, it feels as though he’s become a fully-fledged Dodger.

“I appreciate it. It really is cool,” Freeman said of the fans chanting his name. “Walking up to the plate my first at-bat today, it’s hard not to have a smile on the inside. You try hard to lock it in. I only get 30 seconds to get up there. It’s just special to the fans to embrace, appreciate, and we were able to deliver another win for them tonight.”

Dodgers keys to victory review

Yankees vs Dodgers World Series Game 2 live updates: Shohei Ohtani injury overshadows LA win (53)

Maintain momentum from Game 1 ✅

Momentum maintained. Yoshinobu Yamamoto saw to that, navigating long at-bats in the first couple innings and limiting traffic. Tommy Edman saw to it, too, slugging a solo homer in the second inning to open the scoring. And then, once Mookie Betts singled off Carlos Rodón with two outs in the third, it felt like the whole building knew what was coming. Teoscar Hernández smoked a go-ahead two-run shot. Then fans chanted “Freddie! Freddie! Freddie!” Freeman, the hero of Game 1, went back-to-back. It felt over at that point. It wasn’t over, as Blake Treinen made clear in the ninth, but it sure felt like it.

Quick outs for Yoshinobu Yamamoto ✅

Not at first! Yamamoto spent 20 pitches in the first inning. He was at 35 pitches through two innings, and 52 through three. For a guy who hadn’t exceeded 79 pitches in an outing since June, it seemed a short start was in the offing. But once the Dodgers jumped ahead Yamamoto started to really cook. He set down the Yankees in order in the fourth, fifth and sixth. Dave Roberts even sent him out for the seventh, and Yamamoto got Giancarlo Stanton to pop out with his 86th and final pitch of the night. A shockingly economical result, considering how it started, and a brilliant one-hit, one-run outing.

Spook another lefty ✅

Boo! If Rodón wasn’t rattled by Edman taking him deep early, he surely started to unravel in the third inning. The Dodgers lineup is unrelenting. Even after whiffing Shohei Ohtani in that frame, Rodón still had to deal with the heart of the order with two outs. Betts, Hernández, Freeman and Edman all got to him before he recorded that third out. Rodón’s final line: 3 1/3 innings, 6 hits, 4 runs, 0 walks, 3 strikeouts and 3 home runs. That’s spooky season.

The answers to our World Series trivia teaser

The question, from earlier this evening: Sixty years ago, in Game 2 at old Busch Stadium, the Yankees beat the Cardinals, 8-3, to spoil Bob Gibson’s World Series debut. Gibson (who would win his next two starts and take the series’ MVP award) is one of seven pitchers with 3,000 strikeouts who have started World Series games against the Yankees. Can you name the other six?

The answers: Don Sutton, John Smoltz, Greg Maddux, Curt Schilling, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez. Well done to any of you who got all six!

All Rise! ❌

This game felt like an opportunity for Aaron Judge to set the tone and finally make his presence felt, but he took another 0-for-4 with three more strikeouts, knocking his postseason OPS down to .605. The real problem was that Judge actually did set the tone. For eight innings, every Yankees hitter seemed to follow in his footsteps. Juan Soto’s solo homer was their only hit until the ninth, and even after that ninth-inning rally, the Yankees finished 4-for-31. Brutal night for the Yankees offense, and another bad night for their MVP.

Change of pace 🤷‍♂️

Based on the Game 1 bullpen usage, the idea was that changeup specialist Tommy Kahnle might be a key arm against the Dodgers left-handed bats. But the Yankees never had a lead that was worth protecting, and instead it was lefty Tim Hill — the guy they chose not to use at the end of Friday’s game — who got some potentially important outs against left-handed batters. If the game went differently for the Yankees, maybe Kahnle would have had a chance to make a difference. But without a lead, a great night from the bullpen — 4 2/3 scoreless innings — didn’t mean much.

Score early ❌

In his first Major League seasons, Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto had a tendency to get better as a game went along. So, it seemed important that the Yankees get to him early. Instead, they stranded a leadoff walk in the first inning and went their first turn through the order without a hit. Soto homered in the third, and Yamamoto retired the next 11 in a row. The Yankees needed to score early, but they had only one hit through the first eight innings. Their ninth inning was exciting, but it was too little, too late.

How could it be anything else? The photograph of the game was clearly Shohei Ohtani laying stricken on the ground, pain etched over his face after he attempted to steal second base in the seventh inning.

But just as interesting were the photographs taken as he was accompanied off the field. Because they made clear the serious discomfort Ohtani was in after he appeared to injure his left shoulder. The Dodgers will now hold their breath ahead of the third game of the series in New York.

Such a great series so far between two high-octane teams. Both games could have gone either way, and I think it’s a coin flip the rest of the way.

Fantastic game for Yamamoto. His style is so enjoyable to watch.

Hoping for the best with Ohtani.

The Yankees fans will need to get their stadium rocking. But the Dodgers look dangerous. Seems like everyone is embracing their roles, and their bullpen knows exactly when their numbers will be called. Max (Stassi) said it best: top to bottom, they look locked in.
